Shane Confectionery
Historic Christopher Ludwick Gingerbread
This fragrant, molasses-forward gingerbread is an ode to time-honored recipes and Christopher Ludwick, the German immigrant and celebrated “Gingerbread Baker of the American Revolution.” Finished with a delicate glaze, each cookie has a tender interior and rich, old-world flavor.
Includes one cookie, available in either the naturalistic “Tulip” or graceful “Maiden” shape. The shape will be selected based on availability. If you have a preference, please email us and we’ll do our best to accommodate your request.
In 1754, German-born Christopher Ludwick arrived in Philadelphia and opened a successful bakery at Letitia Court. Here he built a reputation as an American patriot and advocate for his fellow immigrant countrymen. He made invaluable contributions to American Independence during the Revolutionary War. Consequently, he was appointed by General Washington to be Superintendent of Bakers. 250 years later, on the same Old City block where Ludwick got his start, Shane Confectionery is still baking these traditional gingerbread cookies in his honor.
